~ EARTH DAY EVERY DAY!

STREAK THE BOBCAT

Once I knew a bobcat so quick on his feet

He was faster than lightning so I called him streak

Day after day in the woods where we'd play

You'd hear us laughin' and singin' this way

“Oh bobcat oh bobcat oh where can you be

Are you down in a stump hole or up in a tree

    Hidin' from me

    Where I can't see

    Laughin' at me

    He he he he

Oh bobcat oh bobcat oh where can you be?”

Streak was my buddy and we'd pal around

He'd climb up a tree and I'd watch from the ground

He'd swing like a monkey but he never fell down

Streak was a bobcat and sometimes a clown

He's out in the swamp now he's wild and he's free

And I'm bettin' he never thinks about me

But I won't forget him he was my best friend

And we had a good time right up to the end

Streak the Bobcat

In my book “Snake hunter snake talk” I mention a song that I would sing, as we walked the burn areas hunting Eastern diamondback Rattlesnakes, on a huge quail, turkey and deer hunting plantation in South Carolina.  It's a ** bobcat ** song about a bobcat, and it made all my hunting buddies laugh when I'd sing it.  The bobcat's name was “streak”!  Usually, as good snake hunters should do, we would walk and hunt in silence, so we could hear any movement in the grass around us.  We would stay fifty to one hundred feet apart, as we walked and hunted huge areas on the plantations.  Just every now and then I would bust out with the song.  Everybody loved it, and some would sing along with me!

Wild bobcats ** bobcat meow & purr ** meow, and purr just the same as house cats do.  If they like you, they also rub their chin on you.  But that is where the similarity stops.  I mention a little about streak in my short story about Swampy the dog, in another part of this Audio book.

Unlike a house cat, it was dangerous to get near streak with food.  He would get so excited he'd forget what little manners he had, and he would attack that food whether I was holding it or not.  He scratched and cut my hand several times, until I learned to put him in his enclosure before I brought out his food.

I am forever grateful that I was given the opportunity to raise, from a kitten, a beautiful, and truly wild bobcat!  Streak was instrumental in helping me to gain a wealth of knowledge about wild animals.  As with all the animals under my care, he was not my pet.  He was my friend, and teacher.  I watched him every step of the way, as he grew to an adult.  On our daily walkabouts he taught me many things that could never be learned from a book.  The old saying that experience is the best  teacher holds true.  Especially in the case of Streak and me!  I called him Streak, because that cat was as fast as lightning!  In my book, Swampwise, there is a whole chapter dedicated to him!  I wrote his song simply because I loved him!
