~ EARTH DAY EVERY DAY!

OLD JOE THE TURTLE

Old Joe the turtle, he's been around since time began

Knows more than most people will ever understand

His kind has survived on earth throughout the centuries

Old Joe the turtle has one philosophy

live life slow and easy, take all things in stride

Don't waste time complainin' when things don't turn out right

Find another way to go however long it takes

Use common sense and patience

And learn from your mistakes

Old Joe the turtle can't talk like you and me

But if we'll take time to watch him, I'm sure we will agree

He's all determination, no matter what the task

And he just won't stop tryin' til he succeeds at last

     OLD JOE THE TURTLE

“Old Joe” is a Gopher Tortoise, and he is a friend of mine.  He is also a friend to virtually all of the wild animals and birds that live in the sand hills of South Georgia and Florida.  Just like all turtles and tortoises, he has no quarrel with anyone.  Old Joe is a peaceful, contented, and extremely patient wild animal.

There are two reasons why he prefers to live up on the highest ground he can find out there in the swamp.  One reason is that when he digs his burrow up on higher ground, he can dig it deep enough to get away from the cold, without hitting water in an under ground stream, and having the discomfort of water in his burrow.

The other reason, and for him it is just as important, is that his favorite food is a plant known as wire grass.  Wire grass grows only up on high ground.  He can't find it anywhere else.  His relationship with wire grass is a perfect example of how efficiently well organized God's plan for nature, and life on earth really is.  Each time he eats a blade of grass  from the plant it crops the plant, and makes it grow more blades.  He is always very careful not to hurt the plant by taking too many bites from it all at one time.  That way Old Joe and his favorite food wire grass, coexist in benevolent harmony.  Just as God planned it to be.

Old Joe the turtle is also extremely tolerant and generous.   He shares his burrow with all of his wild animal neighbors.  Box turtles, toads, lizards, snakes, insects, birds, and even furry creatures like raccoons, skunks, and opossums are often seen inhabiting his burrow right along with him!

He has very few enemies in the forest.  Thats because most of his body is covered by an extremely hard and all but impenetrable shell like apparatus that discourages most animals from even considering making a meal of him.

Patience and determination, are Old Joe the turtle's most obvious, and admirable traits.  He is also generous.  He minds his own business, and because he is so tolerant he coexists with all things in the forest.   Aren't these some of the attributes that God asks of human beings?

We could learn from Ole Joe the turtle.
